The East India Company

India Office Records holds the records of the East India Company. This is part of the Asia, Pacific and Africa Collections held at the British Library in the UK.

People

Family History Search is part of the British Library website which is very useful as a starting point to seach for individuals in their records.

Families in British India Society (FIBIS) has a freely searchable database of over half a million names and has many links to useful resources. They also produce many helpful research guides and information sheets.

Shipping

Families in British India Society (FIBIS) has an excellent research guide entitled British Ships in Indian Waters: their Owners, Passengers and Crew.

The Immigrant Ship Transcribers Guild contains a wealth of information, especially passenger lists for numerous ships which carried immigrants, especially to the New World and Australia.

Lloyd's Register of Shipping has a selection of useful leaflets about sources for mercantile shipping worldwide. They also offer a paid historical research service.

Lloyd's Captains Registers are held at the Guildhall Library in London, but some of the indexes have been digitised and are online.
